Solo Birthday Trip & Natural Wonders

Updated: Apr 16

Santa Ponsa, Palma De Mallorca

I am halfway into my solo birthday trip in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. It's my second time on this island; I came here for the first time 13 years ago with my mum. I had gone to Barcelona alone for the first time and treated my mum to a holiday in Palma. We had a great time then in the city of Palma. I decided to come here again because I was looking for a reasonably priced holiday somewhere with sunshine and the sea. This time around, I thought I would stay in a different part of Mallorca so that I could explore the island a little bit more, and boy, was it a good decision. This island is beautiful and full of little gems.

I have done so much already. I am staying in Santa Ponça, and I absolutely love it here. It is also a great time of year to visit, with very few tourists and a lovely climate. So far, I have been blessed with blue skies and perfect beach weather. This is due to change from tomorrow until I leave on Tuesday, but I don't mind at all. On the contrary, I think it is very fitting for the energy of this trip. I came here to celebrate my birthday and ring in this new phase of my adult life: post menopause. These first three days of sunshine are the celebration, while the cleansing quality of the rain is like wiping the slate clean, not just in relation to perimenopause but also with other themes in my life.

It's funny because whilst the weather is about to change, I am unexpectedly moving to a different apartment today –on the other side of the bay. I've been having the best time; I've swam every morning, I've been eating really good food, and I've been walking, a lot. I haven't planned anything (which is usually how I roll), and I've just let this island reveal itself to me organically. It's been amazing, I love exploring while getting "lost".

Wow, moving apartments was a blessing. The new place has a sea view; it was one of the reasons I decided to move. The surroundings are stunning. I'm very grateful that I was able to switch –despite the additional cost. I almost didn't move because of the latter, but money will come and go. The experience will stay in my mind as a cherished memory; if I had stayed where I was because of money, I would have missed out on something very special. Again, I'm just grateful I had the money to make the switch at that moment in time.

I woke up to a cloudy sky and slightly cooler temperatures; again, it is welcome. I love it, the colours are now more vivid. The see-through water of the Balearic Sea is now the most beautiful blue, the spring flowers are brighter, and the earthy tones of the sand and stones are showcased once again without the harsh sunlight. The temperature is perfect: it's like being wrapped in a cozy blanket.

The new place has a sauna, so after my morning swim/cold plunge, I headed to the sauna for an hour –I had booked it before heading to the beach. Not only did I have the sea to myself, but the sauna was also a private session. What a treat! I feel so relaxed. I'm about to make myself lunch and head for a walk afterwards. Life is sweet.

Happy birthday to me! :D

I had a very relaxing evening last night; I watched a movie and went to bed. I slept really well, and I feel rested today. I woke up early, did some pranayama and meditated. Now, I'm going to go for a swim in the sea and go for another sauna afterwards (I might as well make the most of it).

I had the most beautiful birthday. After the swim/sauna morning session, I went for a long walk by the sea, followed by a lovely lunch. I spent the entire afternoon outside, where I am the happiest. I went to the city of Palma briefly to get a present for my mum; it was a shock after spending my entire holiday in nature. I am 100% done with city life: the noise, the rush, the traffic and stressed-out people. For the past 3 months, I have been feeling like something big is coming; I hope it involves a house by the sea surrounded by nature :). I am increasingly allergic to civilisation.

I came back from Palma to find that the hotel I rented my apartment from had left a bottle of white wine as a birthday present. I was very touched by that because I hadn't told them it was my birthday; it was a lovely gesture. Gemma and I had planned to call each other on my birthday, and we had a long chat when I returned from my birthday adventures. It was lovely to have some girlfriend time. I ended my birthday with a delicious dinner at a restaurant I found online. The reviews were really good, not just about the quality of the food, people were praising the care and friendliness of the staff. All the reviews were justified: I had an amazing birthday meal. The staff was so welcoming, friendly and funny. My waitress put a candle on the cake I ordered for dessert :D. Again, just lovely gestures that made my day even more magical than it already was.

That's it, this is the last day of my birthday holiday. I am about to leave for the airport. I slept really well last night. I had a bit of a dance party by myself last night after dinner, which was super fun. This morning I went for one last long walk on the beach and one last swim. The Balearic Sea is the cleanest, clearest and most soothing sea I have swum in. Water is always healing to me, but there is something very special in those waters. I am leaving Palma de Mallorca rejuvenated and feeling very blessed. Here is to another year.
