Solar Eclipse, France 12.08.2026
I was 21 at the time of the last total solar eclipse visible from Europe; I vaguely remember standing outside with my mum looking up at the sky, but it is –surprisingly– not a very clear memory. Perhaps my lack of recollection was somewhat of a blessing in making this total solar eclipse a magical experience.
We were blessed with a clear sky that day and watched the entire eclipse until sundown. I had bought the glasses a couple of weeks before the event, so we were ready :). They came with mobile phone filters; sadly, they were not as effective as the glasses, so I have no pictures of the eclipse itself. I really like the pictures I did take though: the sun looks incredibly big in the picture above, reflecting the magnificent nature of this life-giving star. My mum and I were in awe the entire time as the moon slowly joined the sun. Because of the glasses, we were thrown into complete darkness, in an eerie standstill, sometimes interrupted by passing cars and the distant screams of joy from other skygazers.
I'm so glad I got to observe this solar eclipse with my mum again. It is unlikely she will see the next one, making this eclipse even more special.
I've been feeling very emotional since the day of the eclipse. Childhood memories and grief from past relationships have come back to haunt me, seemingly randomly, although I know there is nothing random about them. I believe they are here to be processed with new eyes; hence the sadness, anger, and nostalgia. The past month has been marked by intense celestial activity: the Lion's Gate portal closed on the day of the eclipse, which coincided with a new moon while accompanied by a planet parade and a meteor shower. No wonder I am feeling a little emotional and as though I am trying to find my footing once again.
I don't feel attached to any of them (the memories and the emotions they trigger), nor do I feel like they need a resolution. I don't even think we truly ever get resolution. I think we learn to live with our actions, thoughts, and feelings to the best of our abilities, while time gifts us with hindsight, growth, forgiveness, and hopefully wisdom. Things simply change form, evolving with each version of ourselves as we move through time and space.
